SITE HISTORY
Site Location: The monitoring site was located in central Virginia, just east of Harrisonburg off Interstate 81 and 66, approximately 40 kilometers north of Charlottesville.
Photographic Station: The main camera was located inside a supply closet in one of the lower motel buildings at Skyland, just south of park headquarters and the Thornton Gap Entrance Station. The camera viewed New Market Gap (~294°), 21.7 km.
In the summer of 1991 a second temporary camera was installed for a special study, viewing Matthews Arm (~223°), 12.0 km. This camera was located at Dickey Ridge at the far north end of Shenandoah National Park near the Dickey Ridge Visitor Center
Operational Period: New Market Gap Vista 07/10/91 – 04/17/95
Matthews Arm Vista 07/10/91 – 11/20/91
Data Collection: Photographs were taken at 09:00, 12:00, and 15:00 daily. Approximately 6,100 35mm-color slides of the New Market Gap and Matthews Arm Vistas were reviewed to develop the provided historical photographic archive.
