SITE HISTORY

 

 

Site Location:               The monitoring site was located in the southern portion of Petrified Forest National Park, near Interstate 40 in northeastern Arizona, approximately 150 kilometers east of Flagstaff.

 

 

Photographic Station:    The original site was briefly located along the left side of old Route 6, 0.5 kilometers past the radio towers.  It was relocated in March of 1997 to just south of the Painted Desert Inn, adjacent to a power line.  The camera was moved to view the transmissometer sight path.  The Flattops Vista viewed The Flattops (~180°), 28.0 km.

 

 

Operational Period:       Bidahochi Butte Vista 07/11/86 – 02/12/87

                                    Cholla Power Plant Vista 03/13/87 – 03/29/88

The Flattops Vista 02/13/87 – 04/10/95

 

 

Data Collection:            Photographs were taken at 09:00, 12:00, and 15:00 daily.  Approximately 8,000 35mm-color slides of The Flattops Vista were reviewed to develop the provided historical photographic archive.
