SITE HISTORY

Site Location:               The monitoring site was located on the Island of Hawaii, 95 miles south from the city of Kona on Highway 11.

Photographic Station:    The camera was located at the water tower at Uwekhuna Point, near the Kilauea Visitor Center and viewed Mauna Kea (~337°), 47.5 km.  In September 1990, the camera was relocated to the observation tower at Uwekhuna Point.  This location provided better protection from weather for the camera and produced more usable data, since the views to the southwest were less often obscured by weather conditions.  The camera viewed Kaiholena (~230°), 41.3 km until April 1995.

Operational Period:       Mauna Kea Vista 10/18/86 – 9/13/90

                                    Kaiholena Vista 09/14/90 – 04/13/95

Data Collection:            Photographs were taken at 09:00, 12:00, and 15:00 daily.  Approximately 5,000 35mm-color slides of the Mauna Kea Vista were reviewed to develop the provided historical photographic archive.
